GDE710 W2 | Lecture Reflection: The Effect of Globalization on Design

It was interesting to learn our our four case studios reflected upon the globalization of design. Below you’ll find my summary of each studio response to how globalization has impacted their work:

SIMON MANCHIPP

Globalization:

  • has lead to bigger ideas and greater collaboration

  • is an unstoppable force

  • is something that should be celebrated and embraced

SAM WINSTON

Globalization:

  • hasn’t seemed to change his approach to working

  • regardless of location, Winston prefers face-to-face connections

  • has added speed and connectivity

    • more opportunities to connect with people and at a greater pace of exchange

  • compels Winston to seek uniqueness that face-to-face connections provide

REGULAR PRACTICE

Globalization:

  • forces efficiency

    • given that you are often working with a wide array of time zones and limited opportunities to connect in a given day

  • increases opportunity to work with new clients

  • increases opportunity to learn other cultures and cultural design

  • increases production opportunities by specialty and location

SARAH BORIS

Globalization:

  • increases opportunity to work with new clients and find new work

    • through global conferences and festivals as well as through international clientele

  • increases opportunity to meet people where they are

    • this was especially interesting in how Sarah placed ads in local newspapers inviting new clients and collaborators

INTRO DESIGN

Globalization:

  • increases opportunity to change traditional trajectory of designer’s career

    • You are no longer forced to start as a junior designers in a studio. With globalization, you can go straight from school (or self train) and put your work out into the world (which can be good or bad)

  • Intro prefers face-to-face connections, and has informed their studio location

  • Can hamper progress or compound confusion when communication is solely digital

WRAP UP

In conclusion, I found the common thread amongst the four studios is OPPORTUNITY. Whether it comes in the form of international clientele, cultural learning and design growth potential, greater collaboration amongst peers or even a means in which to choose to remain “local" as a designer. Further, with the advent of the internet and relative technologies, globalization is likely to remain a significant part of design.
