LECTURE REFLECTION: SAM WINSTON, FORM & FUNCTION
So many great and inspiring quotes from this week’s lecture with Sam Winston. Here are a few of my favorites:
Finding a physical approach to problem solving.
Learning through touch.
Using active reflection.
Not knowing, just listening — the ideas will come to you.
Fear is excitement about doing something.
Winston shares four categories in his creative exploration and ideation process:
Process: what processes are appropriate for the environment?
Materials: build into space
Language: found and individual interpretation
Design: tying it all together (steps one through three)
Wintson speaks about building “personal toolkits”:
databases and archives
accepting wherever you are at and making use of what you have
looking at the social elements of design
finding process and rituals
looking at design as multisensory
and most importantly: DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT, GO PLAY!
A SMILE IN THE MIND
There are hundreds of books at the moment claiming to be the experts on Graphic Design. Too many either take themselves much too seriously or fall back on the picture book format where thousands of images lack structure and editing resulting in visual wallpaper. The text a `Smile in The Mind` however, does neither and has the perfect balance of information and inspiration.
Chock full of new examples (this is a second edition), Smile in the Mind provides the reader/designer with loads of ways to use wit, intellect, and design to convey messages effectively.
AUSTRIA SOLAR ANNUAL REPORT
A stunner and winner at the Design Lions Grand Prix, this innovative approach to messaging leveraged the company’s mission through the use of UV photovoltaic inks that when exposed to sunlight reveled the design of the report. Brilliant!
